Winter treks in the Cordillera Huayhuash 2023 / 2024
(mid October - mid April)
For those people want to make a trekking tour during the 'Andean winter' we recommend the short options (4 or 7 days) those that are close to the towns; making the long options it is not prudent, because the remote of the area, the most of the passes could be covered with snow and cross them are very difficult and the campsites are desolate. The two options we mention below run very close to towns in part of the paths there is access to mobile phone, in the most of the campsites are cottages of locals and maximum there are two passes and them are relatively easy compared with the complete circuit.
The best season to make a trekking tour in the Cordillera Huayhuash spans from April to September (the dry months), so from mid October to mid April are the rainy months, during these months just few people make treks in this range. A day during those months is cloudy and some other days clear, the rain usually falls after noon, so in the morning it is possible to walk and we recommend to arrive to the campsites before at noon in this way the rain catch us when you already are inside the tents.
The Huayhuash reserved area is not closed in winter, it is open all year; but in the most of the campsites you will not find any local rangers or collectors.
